Passage One

Economics may be defined as a social science that seeks to understand the choices people make in using their scarce resources to meet their wants. In modern economy the number of goods and services that can be produced is immense. The factors of production are the basic inputs of labor, capital and natural resources used in producing all goods and services. Each one of these resources is scarce.

The basic explanation of economic activity is described in the so-called law of supply and demand. In economic terms the law of demand states that an inverse relationship exists between the price of a good or service and the quantity of the good and service that buyers demand, other things being equal.

However, there is a quirk in tourism economics related to conspicuous consumption, the phrase coined by Thorstein Veblen, a prominent American social theorist and economist who died in 1929. Conspicuous consumption is the practice of purchasing goods or services because of the status they might bring. A number of resort hotels, deluxe cruises, and first-class flights are attractive at least partly because of the Veblen effect.
