新托福考试辅导_foreign 的另外两个重要意思

   foreign最基本的意思是“外国的”。如果你能学会它的另外两个重要的意思对于阅读与写作会有很大的帮助。
    第一个意思是“不熟悉，陌生”。看看下面两个例子：
    Foreign exchange isn’t foreign to us. 我们特别擅长于办理外汇兑换。（这是一家外汇兑换银行的广告。它巧妙的利用了foreign 两个含义：“外国的”与“不熟悉”。）
    He finds the use of various checklists foreign. （他对各种检查表的使用感到很陌生。---选自雅思阅读文章）
    另外一个意思就是“与…不相容、与…格格不入”。下面这几个例句会让你完全学会它的用法：
    Words having certain connotation may cause us to react in ways quite foreign to what we consider to be our usual humanistic behavior. 具有某些含义的词语可能会让我们以完全与人性相违背的方式行事。 (CET-4考试样卷)
    Nothing is so foreign to the spirit of ecumenism as a false irenicism. 没有什么比虚假的和平主义更与基督精神格格不入了。（教皇保罗二世语）
    Dishonesty is foreign to his nature. 欺骗与他的本性水火不相容。 (a dictionary example)
    This very healthy skepticism is foreign to the mathematical approach. （物理学）中这种有益的怀疑态度与数学的方法是大相径庭的。
    我曾在一篇关于考试的一篇范文曾写过这样一句：Nothing is so foreign to the creativity and talent of a person as those poorly-designed examinations. 这句话就是对上面第二个例句的模仿。
